REFURBISHMENT OF PRIVATE RESIDENCE
MR & MRS M
CHELSEA, LONDON, UK
We were invited to design the refurbishment of a semi detached terrace house with a grade II listing in the genteel streets of Chelsea. The brief was to create a home ‘with a soul’ that provides a welcoming, bright, attractive and practical environment.
The design was to provide a sense of personal control over the spaces, reducing stress and increasing comfort. Colours and textures used were tailored to our clients’ personalities, lifestyle and African heritage.
SKA rating was to be used as a guide providing sustainable principles and solutions, whilst still maintaining the desired look, budget and timeframe.
The design provided a home with plenty of flexibility in its use, within the set boundaries of budget and space. We listened to our client’s desires and used a unique interior design style and scheme, which was translated throughout the house.
The successful planning and heritage permissions included enhancements to both the interior and some external features. We strongly recommended a focus on good quality lighting, solid and authentic finishes, natural air movement, increase in daylight, symbolic and impactful artwork, good levels of texture and colour for supporting the senses.
Our design proposals included a number of structural alterations with the aim of bringing more daylight, deeper into the home; this was made possible with the addition of a roof light at the top of the house and the enlargement of the dinning room patio doors into the garden. We connected the dinning room with the kitchen through the introduction of a new structural opening, and the flexibility of a pair of hidden wooden sliding doors to separate the spaces when required. The enlargement of a window, repositioning of door locations and a complete re-planning of the top floor, allowed for an increased sense of space and airiness to permeate throughout.
GI listened, heard and designed – turning an old and dark house into a warm, cheerful and light home for us. We bought a Grade 2 property, in which a lady had lived since 1947. The house needed reconfiguring and updating; every proposed change needed Planning approval. Elina spent time, a lot of time with us to fully understand what we wanted and how we liked to live. She listened deeply, hearing ‘behind the words’ and produced a design that not only passed the Planners but produced a home for us. We used as much eco-friendly and reclaimed materials as we could afford; installed wonderful lighting that suited each room; reconfigured complete floors to give extra space and light. As well as designing and implementing the ‘structure’ of the house, Elina guided us with paint colours, furniture and how to place it, art work, etc. So GI gave us a start-to-finish service – all delivered with smiles and understanding. They have been a joy to work with!
