Brief
We were invited to design the refurbishment of a semi detached terrace house with a grade II listing in the genteel streets of Chelsea. The brief was to create a home ‘with a soul’ that provides a welcoming, bright, attractive and practical environment.
The design was to provide a sense of personal control over the spaces, reducing stress and increasing comfort. Colours and textures used were tailored to our clients’ personalities, lifestyle and African heritage.
SKA rating was to be used as a guide providing sustainable principles and solutions, whilst still maintaining the desired look, budget and timeframe.
Solution
The design provided a home with plenty of flexibility in its use, within the set boundaries of budget and space. We listened to our client’s desires and used a unique interior design style and scheme, which was translated throughout the house.
The successful planning and heritage permissions included enhancements to both the interior and some external features. We strongly recommended a focus on good quality lighting, solid and authentic finishes, natural air movement, increase in daylight, symbolic and impactful artwork, good levels of texture and colour for supporting the senses.
Our design proposals included a number of structural alterations with the aim of bringing more daylight, deeper into the home; this was made possible with the addition of a roof light at the top of the house and the enlargement of the dinning room patio doors into the garden. We connected the dinning room with the kitchen through the introduction of a new structural opening, and the flexibility of a pair of hidden wooden sliding doors to separate the spaces when required. The enlargement of a window, repositioning of door locations and a complete re-planning of the top floor, allowed for an increased sense of space and airiness to permeate throughout.
We acted as Principal Designer and enlisted the services of Dust Architecture and the lighting design skills of Through Light (now Match Lighting) for their respective expertise.
